Family of 5 finds safe place to start over

Helping family at San Fernando Rescue Mission, community support and outreach.

After unexpectedly losing their home, Susan, Jose, and their three daughters came to the Mission.

Until recently, Susan and Jose had stable housing and Jose was employed full-time. When the company he worked for unexpectedly went bankrupt, everything changed. Despite his efforts to find consistent work, employment became sporadic and the family strsuggled to make ends meet.

Without steady income, they were unable to keep up with rent and eventually lost their home. With no immediate alternatives, Susan and Jose faced the unimaginable- spending a week living in their vehicle with their three daughters: three-year-old twins and a five-year-old.

“Although it was a very difficult time, God showed us that we were strong together. As long as we were all together, we knew we could overcome any situation,” Susan said.

The family called 2-1-1 Information Services, a service which allows those in need to access information and obtain referrals to various resources including housing, utility, food, and employment assistance. They referred the family to RMA San Fernando Valley.

“The first thing is that I’m in a safe space after having to live in the car with my daughters. I’m so grateful,” Susan said. “I know it’s shared living, but that’s not relevant. We have a roof over our heads, a place to sleep, and daily meals that are provided for us. We are very grateful to be in this home and feel blessed to have the opportunity to be here.

“It’s a tremendous blessing to have a majority of what we need provided. It’s difficult to find opportunities like this.”

While their immediate safety and physical needs are now being met, Susan and Jose are using their time at the Mission to fully engage in the resources and support available to them. Mission staff have also played a meaningful role in the family’s progress. Beyond meeting basic needs, staff members provide consistent encouragement and compassion- helping families feel seen, supported, and empowered as they move forward.

“Anytime we’ve had a necessity, the staff are accessible. They’re kind in responding to any need or extra support we may have,” Susan added. “The progress a family is able to make here is unique. The Mission is vital to the success of so many of us. We know we’re able to be successful, to move forward, and this place gives us the confidence to do so.”

Their gratitude extends beyond those they see each day at the Mission to the many others that make the work possible. “I’m very grateful for all the partners and donors who give to the Mission. Not only are they giving to me and my family, but they’re giving to all the other families I’ve met here.

“The one thing I know for certain is that when my family leaves, we will not be the same as when we entered. A new family will be leaving, and it’s because of all the work the Mission and those who support it have done for us.”
