Meet Arlene Hernandez, call center receptionist
This month, Arlene celebrates 15 years at the call center
Sascha: Firstly, congratulations on 15 years! How does it feel?

Arlene (right) with Call Center Supervisor Cheryle Gibbons.
Arlene: It feels really good. I love being a receptionist. I put pride into my work. Every morning on my way to work, I pray. I ask God to give me the words to speak to donors, and to give me what I need to know to serve. Especially with what we’re doing this for, to feed and shelter the homeless, to help people get back on their feet.
Had you heard about Rescue Mission Alliance before you started working in the Call Center?
Yes, actually. My cousin used to work here, so I knew of the Call Center through her. I was also aware of the recovery programs, and that part is important to me. I’m in recovery myself; I’ve been clean and sober for almost 16 years. I truly believe in change and that’s the work that we do here. I love it.
You’ve been here for 15 years. What has kept you here?
I love Jesus My faith is really, really strong. Every Friday, we do devotions in the morning, and it’s one of the things I love the most. I think God put me here to do my part in His work to help our mission of helping those in need. I’m happy here. I love my coworkers, my boss—we’re like family.
In 2015, I lost everything in an apartment fire. I was given vouchers to get clothes or anything else my family needed at the time. (Rescue Mission Alliance) helped me when I was in a bad situation. I felt loved.
Is there anything about the Call Center that you wish more people knew?
It’s not just a call center where we take calls for donations. It is also an outreach to help those who are in need of a friendly, caring voice and the offer of prayer. Speaking to the donors is one of my favorite parts. There are so many different personalities on the phone, (our conversation) usually goes beyond just setting up a pick-up.
Cheryle (Gibbons, supervisor) always says, ‘This is where it all starts.’ It brings in donations, the donations go to the thrift stores, they sell it, and we can sustain our programs and help people. We’re part of something bigger.
What’s changed since you first started?
I feel like I’ve come out of my shell more. Before, I used to be more of a shy person. Now I’m better at talking to people and more outgoing with my communication skills. I learned how to multitask too, between entering online donations, scheduling, collaborating with drivers. I feel like I’m pretty good at what I do.
Arlene’s supervisor agrees. “I wish I could clone, Arlene! She has exceptional dedication and unwavering commitment to excellence. That makes her stand out,” said Cheryle. “She has excellent customer service skills, she is caring, personable, patient, and genuine. She creates a positive work environment and sets a stellar example for us all.”
Two of Arlene’s coworkers wrote a letter, unprompted, recognizing Arlene as an “exceptional co-worker.” They wrote, “(Arlene) goes above and beyond. She is more than helpful to all of us. … We truly appreciate, respect and love her for all that she is and does.”
Thank you for your hard work and dedication, Arlene!

Me encanta.
Me sentí amada.
